Groundwater Over-Exploitation in the Indus-Ganga Basin: Satellite Gravity Telemetry (GRACE) and Micro-Irrigation Adoption
NEWS PEG
- NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE-FO) satellite telemetry recorded that groundwater depletion in the northwestern Indus-Ganga plains is occurring at an unsustainable rate of over 15 cubic km per year.
- Hydrogeologists warned that subsidised agricultural electricity and widespread adoption of water-intensive paddy-wheat monoculture have drawn water tables below 150 meters in 80% of administrative blocks in Punjab and Haryana.
- The Ministry of Jal Shakti reviewed the Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY), calling for direct volumetric water pricing, universal micro-irrigation (drip/sprinkler), and accelerated crop diversification into maize, pulses, and oilseeds.
STATIC FOUNDATION
- Dynamic Groundwater Resources Assessment (CGWB): Categorizes assessment units into 'Safe', 'Semi-Critical', 'Critical', and 'Over-Exploited' (where extraction exceeds annual replenishable recharge).
- Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY): World Bank-supported community-led groundwater management scheme implemented in 7 water-stressed States (Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh).
- Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) - Per Drop More Crop: Focuses on micro-irrigation systems to improve water use efficiency at the farm level.
PRELIMS TRAP & PYQ BRIDGE
MAINS ENHANCEMENT
- Crop Realignment Policy: Shifting Paddy away from Water-Stressed Plains — Re-orienting MSP procurement incentives towards agro-climatically suitable eastern states.
- Energy-Water Nexus: Feeder Solarization under PM-KUSUM Component C — Replacing flat unmetered electricity with daytime solar power coupled with volumetric groundwater accounting.
- Aquifer Recharge Mandate: Artificial Recharge & Check Dams — Enforcing mandatory urban and rural rainwater harvesting to replenish deep unconfined aquifers.
