High-Altitude Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs): Dynamic Risk Classification, Early Warning Sirens and Lake Lowering

- The Central Water Commission (CWC) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) completed satellite inventory mapping of over 28,000 glacial lakes across the Indian Himalayan Region, identifying 188 high-risk vulnerable glacial lakes susceptible to sudden catastrophic outburst floods.
- The assessment highlighted that accelerated glacier retreat driven by anthropogenic climate warming has expanded moraine-dammed proglacial lakes (e.g. South Lhonak lake in Sikkim, GEPANG GATH in Himachal Pradesh), which can breach under extreme cloudbursts or seismic shaking.
- NDMA initiated engineering mitigation projects involving automated siphon pipes and controlled spillway excavation to safely drain excess water volume and reduce hydrostatic pressure on fragile moraine dams.

- Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF): Sudden release of large volumes of water and debris from a glacial lake caused by the failure of the natural dam (ice or loose moraine) holding the water.
