National Quantum Mission (NQM): Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), Superconducting Qubits and Post-Quantum Cryptography
NEWS PEG
- The Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Mission Governing Board of the National Quantum Mission (NQM) approved four dedicated Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) with an outlay of ₹6,003 crore.
- The four thematic hubs focus on: Quantum Computing (developing 50–1000 physical qubits), Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices.
- ISRO and DRDO successfully demonstrated free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over a distance of over 300 km between ground stations and airborne platforms, establishing unconditionally secure, un-hackable cryptographic communication channels.
STATIC FOUNDATION
- National Quantum Mission (NQM): Approved in 2023 for the period 2023–2031; aims to seed, nurture, and scale up scientific and industrial R&D in Quantum Technology, making India one of top 6 leading nations in quantum development.
- Quantum Key Distribution (QKD): Secure communication method that uses quantum mechanical principles (Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and No-Cloning Theorem) to generate and share cryptographic keys; any eavesdropping attempt disturbs the quantum state and is immediately detected.
- Qubit (Quantum Bit): Basic unit of quantum information; unlike classical bits (0 or 1), qubits can exist in a superposition of both states simultaneously, providing exponential computational scaling.
- Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC): Cryptographic algorithms that are secure against decryption attacks by both classical computers and future quantum computers (which can break current RSA/ECC encryption using Shor's algorithm).
